Delete your account
For Vako (app.vako.mobile) on the App Store and Google Play. Last updated .
The short version
- In the app: Settings → Delete account. One tap and a confirmation, and it is done immediately.
- Without the app: write to [email protected] from any address, with your account ID or the address you signed in with, and we will do it for you within 30 days.
- Your email address, your Google and Apple sign-ins, your device identifier, your learning setup and your saved clips are erased outright. Nothing can sign back in. If you signed in with Apple, Vako’s access to your Apple ID is revoked as well.
- What you watched and the words you saved stay, attached to a random identifier and nothing else. Ask, and that goes too.
- Deleting the account does not cancel a subscription. Cancel that in the App Store or Google Play first.
In the app
This is the fastest route and it needs nothing from us. Open Vako, go to the You tab, open Settings, and scroll to Delete account at the bottom. The app asks you to confirm, and the deletion happens as you tap. There is no waiting period and no email to click.
It works whether or not you ever signed in. Vako makes an anonymous account on your device the first time you open it, and that account is deleted the same way as one with an email on it.
Without the app
If you have already deleted Vako from your phone, or cannot open it, write to [email protected] and ask us to delete your account. You can write from any address. So that we delete the right account, tell us one of these:
- Your account ID. The app shows it in Settings, under Account ID, and you can press and hold it to copy it. An account that never signed in has no address on it, so for that account the ID is the only thing that names it.
- The address you signed in with. If you used Sign in with Apple and chose Hide My Email, that is the relay address Apple made for Vako, ending in privaterelay.appleid.com. Your Apple Account settings list it next to Vako, under Sign in with Apple.
Where the account has an email address on it, we write to that address before deleting anything and ask you to confirm, so that knowing someone’s address is not enough to delete their account. A reply is all it takes. An account with no address on it (the anonymous one the app makes the first time you open it) is deleted on its account ID alone: it holds nothing that names you, and the ID is shown only inside the app on the phone that holds the account.
If you never signed in and did not keep the account ID, the phone is the only place to find it. On an iPhone, the identifier stays in the phone’s keychain after the app is gone, so reinstalling Vako signs straight back in to the same anonymous account, and you can read the ID there, or delete the account yourself in Settings → Delete account. On Android, removing the app removes the identifier with it: reinstalling makes a new account, and the old one, which holds nothing that names you, can no longer be matched to you by anyone, us included.
We answer every request within 30 days, and usually the same week. You do not have to give a reason.
What is deleted
Immediately, and with no way for us to undo it:
- your email address;
- your display name and avatar;
- your password, where you had one (we hold a one-way hash of it, and that goes too);
- your linked Google and Apple identities, so neither can sign back into the account;
- your device identifier, so the phone gets a genuinely fresh account rather than resurrecting the old one;
- every session and refresh token, so anything already signed in is signed out;
- your learning setup: the language you were learning, your level, your topics and your daily goal;
- your saved clips;
- our record of which clips the feed showed you, and whether you played, skipped, hid or reported each one;
- our record of your subscription.
Straight after that, two requests to the companies involved:
- if you signed in with Apple, we ask Apple to revoke Vako’s access to your Apple ID, so Vako leaves the list of apps using it (Settings → your name → Sign in with Apple);
- we ask RevenueCat, which manages subscriptions for us, to delete its record of you and your purchases.
Each is a single request. If Apple or RevenueCat cannot be reached at that moment, your account is still deleted; write to us and we will ask them again.
What is kept, and why
Your watch history, the words you saved and the product analytics events described in the privacy policy are kept, attached only to a random account identifier that no longer connects to any name, address, device or sign-in. Free text is taken out of those events first: what you searched for, your answers to the questions at the start, and the wording of any error the app reported. What is left is what the aggregate numbers about the product are built from (how many people finish a clip, which languages are learned most), and by that point it says nothing about who you are.
A clip you reported stays reported, with the reason you gave, so that a reviewer still looks at it, but the report no longer says who made it.
If you would rather that residue were erased as well, say so in the same email and we will erase it. It is a real deletion, not a flag: the rows go.
Your subscription
A subscription is billed by Apple or Google, not by us, and only they can cancel it. Deleting your Vako account does not cancel it, and you would keep being charged for an account that no longer exists. Cancel it first:
- iPhone or iPad: Settings → your name → Subscriptions → Vako → Cancel Subscription.
- Android: Play Store → your profile picture → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → Vako → Cancel.
Cancelling stops the next renewal and leaves your access running to the end of the period you have paid for. Refunds are Apple’s and Google’s to give under their own policies.
Anything else
To ask for a copy of what we hold, to have something corrected, or to ask a question about any of this, write to [email protected]. The privacy policy is the full account of what we collect and who touches it.
